No, AI Mode hasn’t become Google’s default search experience

Since Google I/O in May, a claim has been circulating in SEO coverage: AI Mode is now the default Google Search experience, and the ranked list of ten links is no longer the primary way people find things.

It’s worth checking that against what Google actually published, because the two are not the same statement.

What Google said

From Google’s own Search announcement on 19 May 2026:

Upgrading Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash, our newest Flash model, as the new default model in AI Mode for everyone globally.

Google, Search’s I/O 2026 updates

Read that carefully. Gemini 3.5 Flash is the default model used inside AI Mode. It’s a statement about which AI model powers a feature, not a statement about which experience Google serves by default when you search.

Nowhere in that announcement does Google say AI Mode has replaced standard results as the default. Separately, reporting around Chrome has indicated Google is not making AI Mode the default search experience there.

Why the difference matters

These two readings lead to different decisions. If AI Mode were genuinely the default surface for everyone, the rational response would be to treat classic organic ranking as a declining asset and reallocate heavily. If it isn’t, that’s an expensive overreaction based on a misread press release.

The honest position sits between the two. AI Mode is expanding fast and Google is investing enormously in it. Google also has not said it’s the default, and until it does, planning as though it has means acting on a claim nobody can source.

What is actually true

  • Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default model within AI Mode globally.
  • Personal Intelligence in AI Mode expanded to nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages, with no subscription needed.
  • Google called the accompanying Search box redesign its biggest in over 25 years.
  • AI summaries continue to reduce clicks on the queries where they appear, which is measured and tracked in our AI Overviews guide.

That’s a substantial set of changes without needing the exaggeration. The trend is real and it does not require the claim that ten blue links are finished.

The wider point

This is how a misquote becomes consensus. One write-up compresses “default model in AI Mode” into “AI Mode is the default”, the next repeats the compressed version, and within a fortnight it’s being cited in strategy decks as established fact.

The defence is dull and effective: read the primary source. Google publishes its announcements. They take 5 minutes. Our who to listen to page is built around the same idea.
